Voter Engagement Project Fun and Rewarding

This fall, Northern Regional MAIN members and friends knocked on doors, chatted and listened to folks, shared stories, information, and cookies, and hosted a candidates' discussion in Orono. Why? Our goals were to register and educate voters so that people with low incomes have a say in who runs our government and how our tax dollars are spent. A large percentage of low-income people don't vote, and we wanted to do something about it.

Our work paid off. We registered new voters, and gave information on the Tax Cap and on how and where to vote. We even reminded folks to vote by doing a reverse trick-or-treat. It was great fun for us and our neighbors. Meeting new people also allowed us to tell them about MAIN. In turn, they told us about problems they face every day living in poverty. Thanks to all of our volunteers--MAIN members, folks from the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine, and residents of Talmar Wood, for all of their time, effort and enthusiasm. Special thanks to Laura Moore who worked with me to coordinate this project.

Other News: For the 5th year in a row, NR MAIN volunteers had a great time making and delivering Thanksgiving baskets to 63 local families. With your help, we can continue these “community building” activities. We need your ideas and talents. Please join us on the 2nd Saturday of each month for our potluck-meeting, 12:00-2:00, United Methodist Church, Oak St, Orono. Childcare provided.
