New Heating Season: Help Is Out There

It’s time to get ready for the winter heating season.

Weatherize and Repair Your Home:

If you own your own home, the best thing to do is to weatherize your home. Help is available through your local Community Action Program. The CAP agency has both a free weatherization program and a program to fix or repair your furnace. They also have a low-interest home improvement loan program.

You can also get credit on your income taxes for weatherizing your home. For example, if you spend $2000 insulating your home, you can reduce your taxes by about $600. Get more information.

Efficiency Maine also has some programs to help you with the cost of making your home more energy efficient. Find out more about their programs, or call toll-free 1-866-376-2463.

Some tips on how to save money on energy.

Help with Fuel:

The LIHEAP or fuel assistance program is now taking applications. Contact your local Community Action Program to apply.

If you get LIHEAP, you will automatically get a lower rate on electricity for your home or apartment! When you apply for LIHEAP, you will be asked some questions about your appliances. You may then qualify to get a free and more energy efficient appliance, such as a refrigerator.

For more information about these programs:
Maine Equal Justice Partners, or call toll-free at 1-866-626-7059.

Apply for these programs now – don’t delay!
