MaineCare Update:
Results of the 2009 Maine Legislature
Eligibility for MaineCare was not cut.
No increase in MaineCare premiums or
co-payments.
There was some good news from the state
budget that passed in May. Eligibility for
MaineCare (Maine’s Medicaid program)
was not cut, despite the tough economic
situation in the state. This is largely due to
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
that Congress passed in February.
The Act included a temporary increase in
federal funding for Medicaid programs so that
all eligible people can continue to be served.
In Maine, this means that no group of people
will lose eligibility for MaineCare. The other
good news is that the legislature rejected bills
to increase MaineCare premiums and
co-payments.
Some cuts to MaineCare services.
The final budget did include cuts to some
MaineCare services, however. It made
changes in eligibility for Targeted Case
Management and for residential care through
a Private Non-Medical Institution (PNMI). In
addition, MaineCare members will be required
to get approval for more Durable Medical
Equipment (DME) items. Payments to PNMI
and DME providers were also reduced.
MEJP will closely watch these services to see
how they affect MaineCare members. We will
give you more detailed information on rule
changes for Targeted Case Management when
we have it.
