Fix Our Health Care System NOW!

The U.S. Congress and President Obama are currently working to pass national health care reform this year. Recent polls show that many people across the country believe that we need to fix our health care system. People also support a government role in helping people access coverage. Congress has an historic opportunity to finally pass a national health care reform that guarantees affordable, quality health coverage for all.

Advocate for better coverage through Medicaid.

Health care reform is complex and involves many different parts. MEJP and MAIN are focusing on improving access to health care for people with low income. First, we are advocating for better coverage through the Medicaid program. We would like to see a minimum eligibility level for Medicaid for all people with low income.

We are encouraged that key members of Congress are interested in this idea. Senator Kennedy’s bill contains one of the best proposals for this plan. His bill would set Medicaid eligibility at 150% of the federal poverty level and would support states that already provide this coverage.

Maine has led the nation in covering the uninsured through MaineCare, Maine’s Medicaid program. It is important that any final health care reform legislation allows Maine to keep its existing coverage through Medicaid and fill in the remaining gaps.

Help low and moderate-income families.

Health care reform must also provide affordable health care options for people who are not eligible for Medicaid. It should limit the amount that families have to pay, based on their income, so that they can afford the premiums and out-of-pocket costs.

We believe that the plan should guarantee a comprehensive set of benefits for low to moderate income families so that they can get the care they need. People should not have to choose between their health care and other basic needs for themselves and their families.

MEJP will be following the bills as they make their way through Congress this summer. We will continue to advocate for a stronger national Medicaid program and for a plan that helps low and moderate income people afford and access the care they need.

Take Action:
Health Care Reform NOW!

Contact Maine’s Congress members as soon as possible! Tell them that we need their help to ensure that national health care legislation:

  • Strengthens the Medicaid program by expanding coverage for all Americans with incomes below 150% of the poverty level, and
  • Provides coverage we can afford and comprehensive benefits we can count on.

Now is the time! Call Maine’s Congressional members to voice your opinion now!
