DirigoChoice:
Legislature Approves New Funding Plan
Access to Health Care Protected for Thousands of Mainers
The DirigoChoice program at this time provides health insurance coverage to
about 14,500 Maine people. The program has not been accepting new members for some
time now because of a lack of funds.
In June, the Legislature replaced the program’s current funding – the Savings Offset
Payment – with a new funding plan. This will be a tax equal to 2.14% of all medical claims paid by
health insurance companies and others in the health insurance business.
Limited number of new members starts in July 2010.
With this new funding, DirigoChoice expects to start enrolling a limited number of new
members in July 2010. The program will be open to both individuals and new businesses.
The program must keep a balance between individuals and business enrollees, so the
number of new individuals that can enroll may be limited.
