Second Annual Maine Symposium on
Poverty & Food and Economic Security
Monday, October 27, 2008
Augusta Civic Center
The Second Annual Symposium on Poverty
& Economic and Food Security will be
held in Augusta on October 27, 2008.
The 2008 Symposium will focus on the
structural causes of poverty. The goal of
the conference is to develop specific policy
recommendations to end poverty in Maine.
The agenda for this year’s conference will
be guided by the results of the Maine Voices
project. This project held six “listening
sessions” throughout Maine in June and July
of 2008. The purpose of the sessions was
to hear from Maine people with low income
about the issues they face in their daily
lives. The session participants also talked
about their suggestions for solutions to the
problems of poverty.
The major themes and issues raised in
these six discussions will be discussed at
the Symposium. Symposium participants
will use this information to develop policy
recommendations that address the issue
of poverty and create economic and food
security for everyone in Maine.
