Attention Renters!

The Property Tax and Rent Refund Program gives rebates for people who rent as well as homeowners who pay property taxes. Many renters are not aware of this helpful program. You can now apply for a rebate for the rent or property taxes you paid in 2007. The maximum refund available is $2,000.

You may qualify for a refund if:

  • You do not have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2007 household income was $60,000 or less; or
  • You do have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2007 household income was $80,000 or less
    AND
  • Your 2007 property tax was more than 4% of your 2007 household income; or
  • The rent you paid in 2007 was more than 20% of your 2007 household income

NOTE: Seniors who live alone do not need to meet this second requirement if their household income was below $12,400. Seniors who live with a spouse or dependent do not need to meet the requirement if their income was below $15,300.

You can get an application at your town or city office, library, Area Agency on Aging, or Community Action Program. You can also get an application from Maine Revenue Services online or by calling 624 -7894. Maine Equal Justice also has applications; call us at 1-866-626-7059. You can also file your application online

Applications for 2007 must be filed by June 1, 2009.
