Help With Your Electric Bill
Maine consumers with low income may soon see a small drop in their electric rates. The Maine Public Utilities Commission
has voted to increase funding under the Low Income Assistance Program (LIAP). This program gives lower electric rates
to people with low income who also get LIHEAP or Fuel Assistance.
Funding for the LIAP program will increase by over $900,000 per year. This will reduce a
person’s electric bill by $30 per year. Groups like Maine Equal Justice Partners, the Office
of the Public Advocate, the Maine Women’s Lobby, and the Maine Center for Economic
Policy advocated for this increase in LIAP funds. Every little bit helps as we approach the winter season.
