Update on MaineCare Citizenship and Identity Requirement

MaineCare requires proof of citizenship and identity for many people to get or keep their coverage. This rule has been in effect since the summer of 2007. Many thousands of MaineCare members have met this requirement. But, nearly 20,000 people still have not submitted the documents to prove their U.S. citizenship or identity. They must act soon, or they may lose or not get their MaineCare.

Find out more about the documentation requirements here.

Parents must fill out a simple form to prove the identity of their children if they don’t have other types of documentation. Use this form for children 16 and 17.

Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC) has a Help Line that can answer questions about the citizenship and identity verification requirement. They will walk people through the steps they need to take to get the necessary documentation.

The CAHC Help Line number is 1-800-965-7476.
