Medical Reasons Can Stop a Utility Shut Off

Do you or someone in your home have a medical reason why their utilities should not be shut off?

  • Will your doctor, or your doctor’s office, give you a note saying that you are seriously ill?
  • Will they also say that if you lost your utilities it would be bad for your health?

If you can get a doctor’s note, then you can keep your utilities on for at least 30 days. You can even get them kept on for up to 90 days.

* Remember: Your utilities can not usually be cut off in the winter. Go here to learn more

Will I have to pay the bill later?

Yes, you will. But, your utility company must agree to a “reasonable” payment plan with you. That means it has to be an amount that you can really afford to pay. You may be able to get help with paying your bills. Go here for a list of places to go for help

What can I do if my utility company won’t be reasonable?

Contact the Consumer Division of the Maine Public Utilities Commission.
Their number is: 1-800-452-4699 or 287-3831.
