New Maine Housing Commissioner
Nikki McLean
MAIN member, Nikki McLean, of Portland was appointed to the Maine Housing Board of Commissioners by the legislature this April. The goal
of MSHA is to make safe, affordable housing and services available to all Maine residents.
Nikki is a longtime community leader. She is a board member of the Maine People’s Alliance, a Portland Housing Commissioner for 5 years,
an active member of the Leadership Council for Portland Organized to Win Economic Rights, and an active member in the Poor People’s Economic
Human Rights Campaign and the United Nations Human Rights Truth Commission.
Nikki’s experience as a single parent who struggled to find affordable and decent housing
gives her the passion to help others. “I remember waiting to get into public housing with my kids for years. I lived in apartments that took
every penny I had. Once we got into a place we could afford, we went through hell. Slumlords wouldn’t fix the water or toilet. We paid for a
heated apartment but the water in the sink and toilet would freeze. We put up with a lot. No human being should have to go through that.
We need to restore full funding for affordable housing and make good on Maine’s promise to be the ‘way life should be’ – with a good,
safe home!”
Nikki’s top priority as a MSHA commissioner is protecting the
Housing Opportunities for Maine Fund.
