People have the right to paid sick days!

Update: L.D. 1454 An Act to Care for Working Families

Maine people work hard. In return we deserve to be able to take care of ourselves and our families when we get sick. But, while we all get sick, not all of us have the time to get well.

In Maine, nearly half of all full-time workers lack even a single paid sick day. That number is even higher for low-wage earners. In fact, three out of four low-wage workers do not have paid sick days.

Paid sick days can mean the different between food on the table and missing meals - or even losing a job.

That’s why we need your help. Please take two minutes right now to help make sure hard-working Maine people have the right to paid sick days!

L.D. 1454, “An Act to Care for Working Families,” sponsored by Representative Jackie Norton, would make sure Maine workers have that option. And now the bill will be up for a vote very soon. Your legislator needs to hear from you today!

The Maine Women’s Lobby and the Maine Work and Family Coalition is promoting L.D. 1454, which would allow workers in businesses with 25 or more employees to earn one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. A recent amendment caps the number of sick days earned to 5 days per year. Opponents of this bill are working very hard to defeat it, so every phone call will count!

Take Action!

Please call your State Representative and State Senator right now and ask them to support L.D. 1454.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Call the House of Representatives at 1-800-423-2900.

Leave a message for your legislator. Be sure to give your name and address (so they know you are a constituent), your phone number if you want a call back, and ask them to: “Please support paid sick days for Maine workers (L.D. 1454).”

  2. Call the Senate 1-800-423-6900 and do the same.

Don’t know who your legislators are?
