Competitive Skills Scholarship Program:
Coming to a Career Center Near You by March 31st!

We told you about the Competitive Skills Scholarship Program (CSSP) in the last issue of the MAIN Update. This new program helps low-income adults go to college. Career Centers will begin to take applications for this program beginning March 31, 2008.

If you think you might be interested, you should apply early. Funds for this program are limited.

Career Centers in Bangor and Machias are running small pilot programs right now. If you live in those areas and are interested in applying now, check to see if there is still room in the pilot program.

A person is eligible for the CSSP if he or she:

  • Is at least 18 years old;
  • Does not have a marketable college degree;
  • Has income that is less than 200% of the federal poverty level ($1,702/month for a single individual; $2,862 for a family of 3); View income chart
  • Wants to enroll in education or training for jobs that are in high demand and pay family-sustaining wages; AND
  • Has the ability to successfully complete the education or training program that they chose.

The new program will help participants pay for educational costs and support services that are not covered by other funding. The support services can be child care, transportation, or books and supplies. The program will also help with basic income support for some participants with very low income.

Find the Department of Labor Career Center nearest to you, or call 1-888-457-8883.
