Attention MaineCare Members!

1. Have you had your MaineCare annual review since August 2007?

2. If yes, were you not able to show DHHS proof of your citizenship or identity?

If you answered ‘yes’ to both these questions, you are at risk of losing your MaineCare!

A new federal law that affects MaineCare members and applicants started in August 2007. Many people who get or apply for MaineCare must now show documents that prove both their U.S. citizenship and their identity in order to get coverage. This law is for both adults and children.

At first, DHHS was able to wait while people worked on getting these documents together. But this waiting period will soon be over for many people.

If you still cannot show your documents to DHHS or to an Outstation, call the Citizenship and Identity Hotline at 1-800-701-1887 for help right away. If you do have the documents you need, you must bring them to DHHS or to an Outstation right away.

Remember, documents to prove citizenship and identity are due at the time of your annual review. If you talked to DHHS and asked for more time to get your documents, time is running out! The staff from the Citizenship and Identity Hotline (1-800-701-1887) can help you get the documents you need—and they may even be able to help you pay for them! This special hotline will end in March, so it is important to call now.

Please note that some people do not have to meet this requirement. People with Medicare, SSI, and SSDI, as well as legal immigrants and foster children, do not have to show these documents to get or keep MaineCare.

Outstations: Some local social service and health care offices are acting as “Outstations” for DHHS. This means that staff at these agencies will be able to look at your original documents (or certified copies) instead of you needing to go to DHHS to show these documents. You can call the Citizenship and Identity Hotline (1-800-701-1887) to see if there is an Outstation agency near you.

Did you know?

Children with MaineCare can have their identity proved if their parent fills out a special form called an affidavit. There are two affidavits:

Get affidavit for children age 15 and younger

Get affidavit for children age 16 and 17 who go to a school and do not have photo IDs

Return the affidavit to your MaineCare Eligibility Specialist. You can call the DHHS Citizenship and Identity Hotline with any questions at: 1-800-701-1887.
