Update: MaineCare Non-Cats

About 20,000 low-income Maine people get their healthcare covered under the MaineCare non-categorical ("non-cat") program. This is a MaineCare program for:

  • Non-disabled adults between the ages of 22-64
  • Who have no children;
  • Whose income is below 100% of the Federal Poverty Limits
  • (currently, $851 per month for a single person).

Not all states have a program like this, but most New England states do. The program is run under a "waiver." This means that for the program to keep going, the federal government must continue to okay the program. A set budget amount limits how much money can be spent. Regular MaineCare has no such budget limit.

Right now, there is a waiting list for the program. However, people who were on the list as of June 30, 2007 have been put on the program. People who get on the list after that date will get on the program when there are openings. The wait list is first come, first serve. Anyone who wants health care coverage through this program should get on the waiting list as soon as possible. You can get on the waiting list by calling your local office of the Department of Health and Human Services.

People in the non-cat program get basic health care services, including prescription drugs. However, some services are not covered. For example, physical therapy is not covered in the non-cat program.

Call the DHHS office for more information: 1-877-543-7669 (toll-free).
