Supporting working families...

Paid Sick Days: It’s About Time!

When you work hard, you should be able to support yourself and your family when illness strikes. Yet our outdated workplaces and practices prevent us from being both responsible family members and responsible workers.

In Maine, nearly half of us don’t have a single paid sick day, and that number rises for the working poor. In fact, 3 out of 4 working poor families don’t have any paid sick days, forcing them to choose between caring for a sick child and a paycheck.

These are choices no one should have to make. We must create 21st century workplaces that promote both productive workers and healthy and secure families.

Think about it.

  • Have you ever lost a day or more of pay to stay home when you were sick or to care for a sick child or family member?
  • Have you had to take time off of work to recover from a pregnancy or medical procedure?
  • Have you had to go to work even when it put your clients or co-workers at risk?

We must build workplaces that support a healthy economy and healthy families.

This year, Maine lawmakers will consider ways to strengthen working families.

The Maine Women's Policy Center is collecting stories about how difficult it is for many workers without a single paid sick day. Your experiences will help educate legislators and the public about these needed changes. We will keep the details of your story (and/or your name) confidential, if you like.

We need to hear from you!

If you have a story to share, or want to learn more about helping more people have paid sick time, please contact the Maine Women’s Policy Center at: 622-0851.

Your personal story can help the Maine Women’s Policy Center make sure no one has to choose between their job and their family ever again.
