MaineCare for “Childless Adults”
Now Closed—
But Get on the Waiting List
New Openings May be Available Soon!
MaineCare for “childless adults” (also called the “non-categoricals”) was closed to new people on
December 15, 2006. It can only take a limited number of people because special federal rules apply to
this group. No other group of MaineCare members is closed. MaineCare is open for all other groups,
including children, their parents, seniors and people with disabilities.
People who want to get onto the “childless adult” MaineCare program should still apply. People applying
now will be put on the “childless adult” waiting list. About 500 people a month leave the MaineCare
childless adult group. This makes room for people on the waiting list. We think that the Department of
Health and Human Services will open up the childless adult program every three months to fill open slots.
So the sooner a person goes onto the “childless adult” waiting list, the sooner she or he will get on the
program.
Important Rule Change Coming Soon:
“Good Cause” Will Help Keep You Covered
Another important change will go into effect soon for people in this “childless adult” MaineCare group.
MaineCare rules will be changed for people who do not send in their annual MaineCare eligibility review
form on time. If they have “good cause” they will be allowed to stay on the program. They will need
to get the form in within 60 days of the date it was due.
Here is an example of how this new rule may help. John moved and did not get his MaineCare review form
in the mail at his new home. He was given a deadline of February 1st to return his form, but he missed
it because he did not get his mail. On February 15th he went to his doctor who told him that he was no
longer on MaineCare. Under the new rule that will be in effect soon, John can call the Department and say
he had “good cause” for missing the deadline. His “good cause” is that he did not get his review form in
the mail. His MaineCare would then be restored. He would not have to go on the waiting list.
