Need Health Insurance?DirigoChoice Enrollment is OPEN to Individuals, Self-employed People & Small Businesses!
DirigoChoice was created to give Maine people an affordable, comprehensive health care option. And it’s working! DirigoChoice is the fastest-growing health insurance product ever launched in Maine. More than 10,000 people are now enrolled — 34% are individuals, 29% are self-employed and 37% are in businesses with 2 to 50 employees. Nearly eighty percent of those enrolled have incomes less than 300% of the federal poverty level qualifying them for state subsidies that reduce their monthly premium and deductible.
Maine is making better progress than most states at reducing the number of uninsured. We were one of only 7 states in the county and the only New England state to reduce the number of uninsured citizens between 2000 and 2004. But for many of the nearly 130,000 Maine people who remain uninsured, DirigoChoice may be able to help.
DirigoChoice provides a quality benefit including pharmacy coverage, doctor, hospital and specialist visits and 100% coverage for preventive care. It also covers pre-existing conditions—a key benefit for people who have been uninsured. Premiums and deductibles are based on household income. Members with household income below 300% of the poverty level ($58,050 for a family of four and $28,710 for a single person) receive discounts on premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.
DirigoChoice is helping its members keep healthy and stay at work. Recently a housekeeper at an Inn in Cape Elizabeth joined DirigoChoice through her employer. She had been uninsured and hadn’t seen a doctor in years. When she went for a routine check up she discovered she had breast cancer. Because it was caught early she is on the road to recovery. Another person working at a clothing store in Bangor also recently joined DirigoChoice. He was finally able to have hernia surgery that he had been putting off for years.
