Help with Car Repairs, Child Care or Housing Emergencies for Low-income Working Parents

How many times have you heard someone say in despair: "If I can’t get my car fixed I’m going to lose my job." For families living on the edge any unexpected emergency like this can threaten a job.

The good news is that in Maine there’s help for low-income families in this situation. The Alternative Aid Program helps families who are not on TANF fix problems that stop them from getting or keeping a job. Recently, this program became even more helpful. This year the legislature voted to make it available to eligible families once every twelve months instead of only once in a lifetime.

The bad news is that not enough families know about this valuable program. In March, 2006 only 11 families in the whole State received Alternative Aid. Certainly many more could have used this help but just didn’t know about the Program.

So, tell your friends, family and others. Let low-income working families know that there’s help if they have a transportation, child care, housing or any other emergency preventing them from finding or keeping a job.
